WHO ARE THEY? THE SAINT PAULS UNIVERSITY CHAPEL THEATRE GROUP

They came and went. Long time ago or a few months ago. Some of them are still here with us! However, St Paul's University of Nairobi Chaplaincy still sings their names and the wonderful things they did on stage. They were the people behind the entertainment and without them, Friday activities and good Fridays at St Paul's would be boring beyond works. If you are yet to grasp who they are; they are the St Paul’s theatre group members or as they like calling themselves SPT TIMU KUBWA. They are responsible for the rib cracking sessions during Friday activities, the moving Good Friday celebrations and most of all the ever invincible success of St Paul’s during ICYCS extravaganzas!

Talking of St Paul’s theatre group, one would not be taken seriously if they failed to mention Muriithi and Kuchona: the two founders of the group. The two founded theatre group in the early 2000s in a bid to have the Good Friday way of the cross enacted.

The group in comparison with big groups like the St Paul’s student choir was just a toddler by then. This however, did not deter the thespians. Today, SPT Timu Kubwa is one of the largest groups at St Paul's. In a few years time, the group may outdo the indomitable choir in membership.

The group boasts of its immense popularity and prosperity chiefly because of the able directorship it has had over the years and also because of the carefree attitude of the members. In theatre, members do not have to be serious; they only need to fall into character! Nobody in the theatre group will be judged for vacuous or seemingly ridiculous behaviors. If anything, this is how you ought to behave sometimes!

Theatre group is indeed the place to go to on Friday evenings after a week of mind-boggling cramming and academic torture. Here, you are met with friendly ear to ear smiles and the luring temptation of being a little bit too crazy. In theatre, we acknowledge that life is hard enough and we are therefore easy on you!

Theatre group has from time immemorial been a constant source of entertainment during Friday activities. They will always have a skit, folk dance or play in the ready to entertain their eager audience. The St Paul’s audience in return, does not fail them. They will heartily laugh at the comedies and give a a round of applause at the end of each theatre performance.

It should be noted that all the performing emcees at St Paul's University of Nairobi Chaplaincy had a stint with theatre group before delving at emceeing. It is in theatre that these emcees mustered confidence and fluency of speech. Famous Barry Achami or Mr. B celeb performed as Barabbas in the way of the cross 2011. Moses Kamuyu is well remembered for the rib cracking narratives he performed with Dominic Oyori.

Coconut Nyururu Aka Sufferer, the incumbent  St Paul's emcee and comedian at Kenya’s TV Kenya Korna is a staunch member of the theatre group. James Njagi, an upcoming and promising emcee could be said to be the funniest actor in theatre. What’s more. He doubles up to be the group’s coordinator.
